Who We Are: The Customer Care and Patrol (CAP) Team services downtown Kamloops by providing assistance to businesses, tourists, and the downtown street population. Under management from the Kamloops Central BIA, the Patrol members will provide a variety of customer services to the center of the city, and patrol the entirety of the downtown area to promote a safer and friendlier downtown.
The Team: The CAP Team consists of a Team Supervisor and several patrol members. CAP Team members are all responsible for taking on both the roles of downtown Safety Patrollers and Ambassadors. Both the Safety Patrol and Ambassador aspects of the program are important to the success of the team.
Safety Patrol: Observe and report unsafe conditions, crime, graffiti, and vagrancy around the downtown and report/refer panhandlers and homeless to outreach facilities that may assist them. As well, our team assists the RCMP and By Law with crime prevention strategies and initiatives in a non-aggressive capacity.
Ambassadors: You must be an embodiment of hospitality and tourism. Greet and welcome both locals and visitors to the Centre of the City. Lead tours for Rocky Mountaineer Tourists. Aid tourists daily by pointing out historical points of interest, key events and activities, attractions, restaurants, shopping, parking and accommodations. Provide Downtown Visitor Info Centre/Kiosk coverage and work with Tourism Kamloops.
All team members will be expected to interact positively with people from all walks of life on a regular basis, and serve as an extra set of eyes-and-ears for the RCMP and By-Law.
Ideal candidates will have knowledge of the Kamloops Central BIA area; be self-motivated, flexible, and friendly; work well independently and in a team environment; possess good time management skills, and be approachable and attentive to their surroundings while on patrol. Candidates must be physically fit and capable of patrolling on foot for 8 hours a day in all weather conditions.
Training: First Aid, Tourism BC, Bylaw basics-City, Bike Riding-RCMP, Media & Public Relations, Customer Service, Public Health issues, Outreach and Needle Safety, Self Defense, and Radio Communications.
Cap Team – Qualifications
- Between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the time of intake/selection;
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons who have been granted refugee status in Canada
- Be willing and able to walk in extreme weather conditions
- Be physically fit and capable of patrolling on foot for 8 hours a day
- Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
- An interest in policing/law/social-services/outreach/tourism
- Other qualifications may include: a second language, self-defense training/experience, first aid, crime prevention, tourism, hospitality, media, public speaking/relations, social work, and security.
